Built-in vs Freestanding ovens

Built-in vs Freestanding Ovens: Which Is Right for Your Home?

Buying a new oven? The first decision is the type. Here’s a clear, jargon-free breakdown to help you choose with confidence.

Freestanding cookers

A freestanding cooker combines an oven and hob in one unit that slots between your cabinets. It’s the simplest, most affordable option, easy to replace, and you can take it with you when you move. Great for renters and straightforward kitchens.

Built-in ovens

Built-in (integrated) ovens are fitted into a cabinet or under the worktop, with a separate hob. They give a sleek, seamless look and let you position the oven at eye level. Ideal for fitted kitchens — but installation costs more and they’re less portable.

Single vs double ovens

  • Single oven: one cavity — compact and economical, fine for most households.
  • Double oven: a main cavity plus a smaller one (often a grill) — perfect for cooking at two temperatures at once, ideal for families and entertaining.

Fan, conventional, or multifunction?

  • Fan ovens circulate hot air for even cooking and let you use multiple shelves at once.
  • Conventional ovens heat from top and bottom — better for some baking.
  • Multifunction ovens offer both, plus grilling and defrosting modes.

Don’t forget energy and cleaning

Check the A–G energy label to keep running costs down, and consider a pyrolytic (self-cleaning) model if you’d rather not scrub. Always have built-in ovens fitted by a qualified electrician (or Gas Safe engineer for gas).
